Lindsay Palmer and her winning design

A graphic designer who studied at the University of Suffolk is celebrating after seeing her design on the track in Las Vegas after winning a competition to create a livery for an F1 racing car.

Lindsay Palmer, an avid Formula 1 racing fan and University of Suffolk alumni entered the competition, run by top Formula 1 team, after seeing it on the team’s Instagram page.

Lindsay took inspiration from the bright lights of Las Vegas and combined the names of Red Bull’s two drivers, current World Champion, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, incorporating their initials onto poker chips and playing cards in a nod to the city’s glitzy casino lifestyle.

The competition entries were posted on the team’s Instagram page where fans chose their top ten designs before selecting Lindsay’s at the winner.

Over 24,000 cast votes and Lindsay enjoyed a VIP trip to Las Vegas including access to the paddock, a garage tour and seeing her design brought to life by Red Bull designers.

Lindsay said: “As an F1 fan, I saw the promo competition and I spent a few evenings coming up with the concept to fit the brief of “to look good under the lights of Las Vegas”.

She added: “When you think of Vegas, you think of the bright lights and casino culture, and I integrated the drivers’ initials and racing numbers into playing cards and poker chips to create a design called “Two of a Kind”- a play on a poker hand.

“It still all seems rather surreal. It has certainly given me a boost in confidence and motivation.”

Lindsay studied the BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at the University of Suffolk and graduated in 2012.

Hailing from Colchester, she lived at home and commuted to the university’s Ipswich campus, praising the course’s variety of projects which helped her work out the path she wanted to follow once she graduated.

She said: “I was able to have a variety of design work for my portfolio once I’d graduated.

“My advice for students would be to get stuck into all the different projects as it will help to see where strengths and interests lie.”
