UK undergraduate students

Full-time fees

For many, money plays a major role when deciding to carry on with, or return to, education. In recent years there have been significant changes to the funding arrangements for UK and EU students.

Full details are available at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance|. A hard copy of this information can also be obtained by telephoning 0800 731 9133.

Under the higher education funding arrangement no full-time undergraduate student will have to pay fees before they start university or whilst they are studying. Students will repay their tuition fees following graduation and upon earning over £15,000 per year.

In 2010/11 UCS will charge both UK and EU students an annual tuition fee of £3,290 per year for all degree schemes. Fees for 2011/12 have not yet been agreed but once finalised they will be available here.

Part-time fees

Part-time fees vary depending on the length of time a student wishes to take to complete their course. Module fees for 2011/12 have not yet been finalised, but as a guide of costs a list of fees for the current academic year are shown in Tuition Fees 2010/11|.

Student loans

There are two types of student loan available, one for tuition fees and one for maintenance.

Both types of loans are supplied by the Government and are linked to the rate of inflation. Students should apply to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance| at the same time they make their UCAS application. An online calculator will help students work out how much money they can get.  Student Finance England will then advise students of the amount of loan they are entitled to and will ask the student to indicate whether they wish to take the full loan or a lesser amount.

Non-repayable grants

New full-time students from lower income households will be able to apply to Student Finance England for a non-repayable maintenance grant or special support grant of up to £2,906 a year (2009/10 rates).

Bursaries

UCS understands how difficult it can be for students to afford to study and therefore offer a generous bursary scheme to full-time students from low income households.

Bursaries are non-repayable and are based on the amount of maintenance grant or special support grant the student is eligible to receive. Students who are in receipt of the full maintenance/special support grant of £2,906 will be eligible to receive a £1,000 bursary, and those in receipt of a maintenance/special support grant of between £1,000-£2,905 will be eligible to receive a £500 bursary.

The UCS bursary scheme is in addition to the assistance available from Student Finance England.

Health care bursaries

Students on professional health care courses, which attract a NHS bursary, do not have to make a contribution towards tuition fees during the period the bursary covers. If the bursary is means tested (degree courses), students will be eligible for a student loan in addition to the bursary.

Funding to support Leadership and Management Training

The LSC offers financial support to organisations to help towards the cost of training and development for Directors and Senior Managers. To find out if your organisation is eligible and for further details visit www.traintogaineast.co.uk |

EU undergraduate students

Tuition fees

All applicants to English universities are required to contribute towards the cost of their tuition for each year of their degree.  In 2010/11 this fee is £3,290 per year.  Students will be able to borrow this money from Student Finance England/EU student finance, and repay this after they graduate and begin to earn the equivalent of £15,000 each year.

If you are applying to study an NHS funded course, there are no tuition fees to pay, as the NHS will fund these.

Further information on the financial support available to European Union students can be found at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance-eu|

In addition, students will need approximately £5,500 each year to cover living costs.

Bursaries for EU students

UCS offers a generous bursary scheme for students from all European countries*.

For each year of study, students will receive a non-repayable bursary from UCS to help with living costs. The amount of the bursary will increase each year after successful completion of the previous years’ study:

Year 1: £500 bursary
Year 2: £1,000 bursary
Year 3: £1,500 bursary
