University of Essex
The University of Essex, established in 1965, is one of the UK’s leading academic institutions. The University is ranked in the UK top ten for its research excellence, with many of the academic departments at the forefront of international research in their field, and is ranked eighth nationally for teaching.
Essex has seventeen academic departments covering humanities, social sciences, management, science and engineering, and law. It has a strong Graduate School, offering both taught courses and research programmes. It is one of the UK’s most international universities, with students from over 142 countries.
The Colchester Campus is set in a beautiful 200-acre parkland, just two miles outside of Colchester, with teaching buildings, student accommodation, sports facilities, a gallery and theatre, banks, shops, bars, cafés and a nightclub all on one site.
The Southend Campus, based in the heart of Southend-on-Sea combines state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including an IT lab, open study area, reference library and student common room, with a business hub and retail units. The Southend Campus is home to students studying within Essex Business School, as well as some courses within the School of Health and Human Sciences and East 15 Acting School.
The Loughton Campus is the base for students on many of the East 15 Acting School’s mprogrammes. The campus is just five minutes from the nearest London Underground station, Debden, on the Central Line.
Essex has one of the most active and well developed Students’ Unions in the country. As well as employment and development opportunities, the Students’ Union provides an excellent array of commercial and social facilities including a varied entertainments programme, a student run radio and TV station, shops, an advice centre, a volunteering scheme, over 120 different societies and more than 40 different sports clubs.
Students can also study for University of Essex degrees at Colchester Institute, South East Essex College in Southend and at Writtle College on the outskirts of Chelmsford.
