Teaching and Assessment

Methods of teaching

Alongside the Virtual Learning Environment, courses are taught using traditional lectures, classes, group projects, presentations, laboratory-based practicals and, where relevant, professional practical placements.

All these teaching methods aim to develop transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication, written and presentation skills, which are highly sought after by employers.

Private study

In addition to the lectures, classes and practical elements of each course, students will also be required to spend time studying on their own. Researching in the library, carrying out individual practical work or projects, and writing reports and essays are all important aspects of each course. Students will be given a reading list for each unit of study they take, but it will be the students’ responsibility to plan their own reading and private study time.

Support is available to students, particularly those who have been out of education for some time, to help plan their work load and make the most of their private study time.

Assessment of work

In most subjects, a proportion of a student's final result is based on a combination of coursework, practicals, portfolios, projects and a dissertation, and possibly examinations. The weightings between these different assessment methods vary between subjects and qualifications.
