Applying as a Mature Student

UCS is not just for 18 year old students finishing their further education courses. Whether someone has been unemployed, is raising a family or seeking a career change, UCS gives prospective students an ideal opportunity to return to learning. There are a range of courses, both full and part-time, in a variety of locations across the county to help people fit academic study into their everyday lives.

Students who will be 21 or over when they start their course will be regarded as a ‘mature student’. UCS offers a flexible admissions policy for mature students which takes into account life and work experience. UCS also asks that students can demonstrate the ability to undertake the appropriate level of study and that they have the necessary study skills. Where there are course requirements, students will be asked to demonstrate an equivalent knowledge of the subject, and if they have not had any formal education for several years they may need to undertake some sort of preparatory course, for example an Access course. All mature students who do not come from a traditional educational background, or who have been away from education for some time but believe they have relevant experience at an appropriate level, are encouraged to apply.

Please note that as a mature student applying for the Pre Registration DipHE and BSc (Hons)Nursing and Midwifery programmes you will still be required to meet the typical offer or equivalent qualifications as stated in the fact file box on each course.

For additional information about becoming a mature student at UCS, including speaking to a representative about your eligibility before submitting a formal application, please contact the Admissions Office on 01473 338348.
