BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Progression Route)

Course summary

This progression course is designed for students with a Foundation degree (FdSc) or Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND) in an appropriate built environment subject who wish to further their academic study. It may also satisfy the academic requirements for membership within an appropriate professional body. Applicants entering with an HNC or HND will be required to first undertake modules from the FdSc programme to meet the entry criteria (60 credits for HND, 120 credits for HNC).

The course builds on the learning gained on FdSc and HND courses and aims to further support students in their individual career development through the study of technology and management modules. The academic content of the degree is complemented by opportunities to develop the skills required in the work place such as team working, management skills, ICT and communication.

Course structure

This course will be attended on a day-release basis for a period of two years.

Year One modules: Project Control, Production Technology and Construction Finance & Economics

Year Two modules: Contract Law & Administration and Dissertation.

Work placements

As work-related learning is an important characteristic of this Foundation degree, work placement or relevant professional activity is an essential requirement for study. It is expected that most part-time students will be in appropriate professional situations and, in the case of full-time students, assistance will be given in finding appropriate placements.

The Professional Practices modules will focus on work-related activities and will involve agreement with employers or host companies on projects and assessed work.

Many of the modules are delivered by practising professionals employed in the local construction industry and site visits are an important part of the course.

Assessment

Modules are assessed in a number of ways including coursework assignments, time controlled assignments, phase tests, group projects, presentations and examinations.

After the course

On successful completion of the degree, students will be able to further their career both in the construction industry and within appropriate professional bodies. Students working in the construction industry will be able to progress in a wide range of roles including building contracting, construction management, design, local authorities and building maintenance.
