FdSc Construction Management
Course summary
These courses have been designed in consultation with the construction industry to meet its expanding need for professional, technical and managerial personnel. The courses cover key aspects of the industry including theoretical and practical applications within the sector. Students will develop the capacity to apply their skills, knowledge and critical thinking to their profession.
Applicants wishing to complete the BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Progression Route) who hold an HNC/HND will be required to first undertake modules from the FdSc Construction Management to meet the entry criteria (60 credits for HND, 120 credits for HNC).
Course structure
Throughout the course students are expected to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of the sector in direct relation to their own employment or work placement.
FdSc modules include: Construction Technology, Resource Management, Surveying Practices, Sustainable Practices, Planning and Building Control, Measurement, and Contractual and Procurement Procedures.
BSc (Hons) modules include: a dissertation, Project Control, Production Technology, Construction Finance and Economics, and Contract Law and Administration.
Work placements
As work-related learning is an important characteristic of these courses, work placements or relevant professional activity is an essential requirement for study. It is expected that most part-time students will be in appropriate professional situations. Full-time will be given assistance in finding appropriate placements.
The Professional Practices modules focuses on work-related activities and will involve agreement with employers or host companies on projects and assessed work.
Many of the modules are delivered by practising professionals employed in the local construction industry and site visits are an important part of the course.
Assessment
Modules are assessed in a number of ways such as coursework assignments, time controlled assignments, phase tests, group projects, presentations and case studies.
After the course
Successful completion of these degrees should enhance employment and promotion prospects in the construction industry. Graduates have gained employment as building control officers, contract supervisors, estimators and site or project managers.
