Course summary
These courses are designed to prepare students for a range of technical and managerial careers in Civil Engineering. Students develop their skills, knowledge and understanding through the research and presentational skills necessary to successfully complete coursework. The courses relate to employment throughout.
Applicants wishing to complete the BSc (Hons) who hold a HNC/HND will be required to first undertake modules from the FdSc to meet the entry criteria (60 credits for HND, 120 credits for HNC).
Course structure
FdSc modules include: Civil Engineering Technology, Materials & Structures, Surveying Practices, Geology & Soil Mechanics, Structural Analysis & Design and Sustainable Practices. (80 credits per year)
BSc (Hons) modules include: Materials Technology, Structural Analysis, Contract Law & Administration and Engineering Geology. (60 credits per year)
Work placements
As work-related learning is an important characteristic of this Foundation Degree, work placement or relevant professional activity is an essential requirement for study. It is expected that most part-time students will be in appropriate professional situations and - in the case of full-time students - assistance will be given in finding appropriate placements.
The Professional Practices modules will focus on work-related activities and will involve agreement with employers or host companies on projects and assessed work.
Assessment
Students are assessed in a number of ways including coursework assignments, time-controlled assignments, phase tests, group projects, presentations and examinations.
After the course
Graduates have found employment as site engineers, CAD technicians, technician engineers, highway engineers and estimators. Students completing the FdSc course also have the option of entering the final level of BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Progression Route) or the BSc (Hons) Construction Management (Progression Route) at UCS. Honours degree graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies at postgraduate level at UCS.
