FdSc Architectural Technology
Course summary
This course is designed to prepare students for a career as an architectural technologist or an architectural technician. It provides specialised studies relating to the design of buildings, which are directly relevant to professions in which students are currently working or intend to seek employment.
The course has been designed to meet the recommendations of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
Course structure
The course is structured over three years and is attended on a part-time basis. Students usually take four years per year.
First year modules: Construction Technology A, Design Technology & Principles, Information Technology for Construction Professionals, and Professional Practices A.
Second year modules: Surveying Practices, Sustainable Practices, Materials & Structures, and Building Services.
Third year modules: Construction Technology B, Conversion & Adaptation of Buildings, Contractual & Procurement Procedures, and Professional Practices B.
Work placements
As work related learning is an important characteristic of this Foundation degree, work placement or relevant professional activity is an essential requirement for study. It is expected that most part-time students will be in appropriate professional situations. The Professional Practices modules focuses on work related activities and will involve agreement with employers or host companies on projects and assessed work.
Assessment
Modules are assessed in a number of ways, including coursework, time controlled assignments, individual and group projects, presentations and end assessments.
After the course
Graduates can gain employment in a wide range of roles within the construction industry, including architectural practices or in other organisations responsible for the design and management of building projects. This degree enables access to the two-year BSc (Hons) Construction Management| (Progression Route) at UCS.
