BA (Hons) Photographic and Digital Media

Course summary

This course is designed to stimulate visual exploration, encourage intellectual debate, and inspire creative practice. Students develop skills in research, planning and time management through supported academic and independent study.

The course is primarily concerned with approaches to contemporary photography and aims to meet the needs of aspiring practitioners. This course is designed to reflect the evolving nature of photographic practice, where photographers increasingly develop the potential of the medium in unexpected and innovative ways.

Course structure

The first year is exploratory and introduces students to basic technical, practical, critical, historical and theoretical skills across the subject area of photographic and digital media.

The second year gives more scope for independent research and discovery, whilst the third year brings these experiences together in a dissertation and specialist project. Participation in national competitions is strongly encouraged.

It is expected that students' work will become increasingly independent as they progress through the course, and that students will work creatively with their peers and external agencies.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a variety of methods including practical projects, essays and seminar presentations, in addition to exhibited bodies of work.

After the course

Successful graduates have the skills go on to a wide range of careers and further studies. Employment opportunities include photography, individual practice, journalism, picture editing, advertising and research, a variety of careers in the creative industries, teaching, and further academic study and research.
