BA (Hons) Person-Centred Counselling
Course summary
This course offers students a strong theoretical and practical understanding of and training in Person-Centred Counselling. It enables students to qualify and practice as professional counsellors, to facilitate training and therapeutic groups, whilst working towards accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Course structure
After completion of the first two years of this course students are able to practice as professional counsellors, and those choosing to leave the course at this point will be awarded the Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling. The experiential training takes place over a full day per week during the first year, a day and a half plus placements and supervision in the second year.
The third year enables the students to obtain a BA (Hons) Person Centred Counselling. Through the third year training, students will get familiar with research in the field and with group facilitation. The training will take place over a full day per week.
Work placements
At the start of the second year, students will be asked to take up formal placements in order to complete 100 hours of counselling practice that are required to gain their Diploma. Students will be asked to have external individual supervision. Group supervision will be provided by the course. Students choose their individual supervisor as well as choose and negotiate their placements, although an indicative list of possible placements and supervisors will be provided.
Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the training and is self, peer and tutor-based. Assessment is both formal and informal, written and verbal. It addresses all areas, including academic and professional learning, the understanding and application of counselling skills, the development of self-awareness and development of oneself, as well as client work, placements and supervision.
After the course
The course prepares students for careers as professional counsellors and for the use of advanced therapeutic skills in other settings. Students completing the course will meet the training requirements for individual accreditation as counsellors by the BACP.
