BA (Hons) Music Production (Progression Route)
Course summary
These courses provide training in the core skills of music composing, sequencing, musical arranging, live sound, location recording, music for new digital media and recording studio techniques required for careers in the music or related media industries. Students can expect industry standard equipment and training by practising professionals. By the end of their studies, students should be familiar with the nature and demands of the creative industries, and should have gained the confidence and competence to make a professional contribution to it.
The Progression Route focuses on audio post production, composing and related media. Emphasis is also placed on the development of project management and specialist technical skills essential to professionals in the music production sector.
Course structure
FdA modules include: Composition, Film Music, Sound for Digital Media, Sound Recording, Live Sound, Audio Post Production, and the development of graduate and employment skills.
UCS Bury St Edmunds is an approved Digidesign Sponsored School. A unique feature of this course is the opportunity to achieve accredited Pro Tools training (Digidesign 101 and 110 qualifications).
BA (Hons) modules include: Sound Design, Musical Arranging, Pro Tools 1, Pro Tools 2, and a dissertation or project.
Work placements
The Bury St Edmunds Centre operates a busy commercial studio with paying clients from across East Anglia and beyond. Students are expected to derive much of their required work placement experience by operating, under supervision, full studio and recording sessions for visiting bands, musical ensembles, orchestras and other clients. Composition opportunities will also be available for those interested in scoring for film, and computer games.
Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used such as creative and practical music production, written assignments, portfolios, group work, time limited exercises and formal written examinations.
After the course
These degrees enhance a current or potential career in music composing, publishing, location recording, live sound and studio recording. Skills learned would be equally useful in the film, radio and television broadcast industries. Related opportunities could include music for web, music for games design, musical software production, sample libraries and manufacturing.
