School of Social Science and Business

The School of Social Science and Business offers courses from a range of disciplines, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. This is supplemented with a portfolio of short courses for professional development and consultancy services to business.

The team of academic and support staff are proud of their strong academic curriculum that is driven by the requirements of the regional and local workforce development needs and the career aspirations of students, as well as providing opportunities for wider participation by the local community. The courses are designed to develop knowledge, which is linked to practice so that all students can function effectively in the workplace.

The School of Social Science and Business offers a stimulating environment in which the student experience is valued. The team embraces a commitment to students as individuals, demonstrated through a highly effective tutorial policy. This means that all students have easy access to all staff, enabling them to gain the personal and academic support they might need, when they need it.

The School is divided into two Programme Areas:-

Children, Young People and Education

This Programme Area has over 500 students, 16 staff and a portfolio of 8 undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes linked to Early Years and Education.

There is an increasing demand from government for higher levels of professionalism in the Early Years sector, as set out in the Children's Workforce Strategy. Various agencies such as the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) aim to transform and professionalise the early years workforce. We are a key player in the area of Early Years and are well placed to bring the academic rigour required to challenge and push the boundaries.

University Campus Suffolk is a key provider of teacher training in the region, both through post compulsory PGCE programmes and via the SCITT schemes based in Ipswich and Clacton.

Social Science and Business

This area has formed from the amalgamation of the long established Suffolk Business School with the established and rapidly developing Social Science team. The Programme Area has over 450 students, 28 staff and a portfolio of 15 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Of great importance to staff and student are the purposeful links with business in the area. This means that courses are developed with active input from representatives from local businesses who also make very useful contributions to our courses. Guest lecturers and master classes delivered by a variety of business people offer our students unique insights in the practice of Business Management, in a range of contexts, and the immediate issues facing them. These businesses (large and small) are also a source of project and internship opportunities for our students. Business is global so we aim to develop an international view, for example, the MBA students spend a week at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts where they undertake consultancy for local firms.

The Social Science team has developed a number of successful degrees in the areas od Psychology, Sociology, Criminology and Youth Studies and in these popular and growing subjects, seeks to provide a thorough understanding of human experience and behaviour across a wide range of social, organizational and cultural phenomena.

Working with the real world is equally important to the Social Science area and some innovative links with the working world have been made in various areas of Psychology, Sociology, Criminology and Youth Studies.
