Dr John Callow
Dr John Callow is a visiting lecturer at UCS and will be holding a series of special workshops and talks throughout the academic year 2009-10. Details will be posted on the History Events| page.
Dr John Callow graduated from Lancaster University with First Class Honours in History in 1993. He achieved an MA with Distinction from Durham in 1994, the Queens Award for Best Qualified Postgraduate from Lancaster University 1994-95, and his PhD in History from Lancaster University in 1998. He has taught at Lancaster University and Goldsmiths College, University of London. Since February 2006, he has been the Director of the Marx Memorial Library, London.
John Callow is a writer, screenwriter, and historian, specialising in Seventeenth Century politics, witchcraft, and popular culture. He is the author of 'The Making of James II' (2000); 'Witchcraft & Magic in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Europe' (co-author with Geoffrey Scarre, 2001); 'King In Exile' (2004); and ''James II - The Triumph & the Tragedy' (2005), as well as numerous articles. John is currently working on 'Embracing the Darkness - a Cultural History of Witchcraft' (for I.B. Tauris) and a study of the Bideford Witches.
He has appeared on programmes and radio shows for RTE, ITV, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, BBC Radio 3, Radio 4, and the World Service.
