Dr Mike Doherty is a Senior Lecturer, Head of the Centre for Design Innovation (CDI) and Course Leader of the MA programme Design Context and Practice, validated in February 2008. His academic background and teaching experience has crossed the boundaries of a number of design disciplines.

Emerging from a 3-Dimensional Design background, Mike has developed a particular interest in designing through convergent new media (which might include 3D virtual modelling, sound, motion, live video capture, graphics and interactivity). This interest is reflected in having developed the Centre for Design Innovation (CDI), established in September 2007, which provides an environment for the generation of innovative design content and content analysis. The Centre has achieved significant success in attracting external sponsors who have contributed to student fees and provided high profile live project engagement.

Mike's PhD research explored education, training, and associated social factors, in design. The evaluation of fitness for purpose in communication design beyond the immediate designer/consumer agenda is seen as a vital component of a twenty-first century Higher Education design programme. Through the lens of 'Realist Stakeholder Analysis' Mike asks BA and postgraduate students alike to question the real effects and consequences of design intervention on an increasingly global stakeholder audience.
