Melanie Selfe is Course Leader of the BA Honours in English and is responsible for leading curriculum developments in the degree. She has taught at the Humboldt University in Berlin, for the British Council in Algeria and for the Open University. Melanie currently teaches Language Analysis, Critical Theory, Women's fiction, Postcolonial Writings and Cityscapes: Cinema and Modernity on the UCS English degree. She also has experience of teaching in further and adult education, has taught on the PGCE in Post-compulsory Education and supervises undergraduate students doing Professional Practice placements in educational settings.

Melanie's doctoral research is on the experimental and fragmentary prose works of Bertolt Brecht and his reception of the philosophy of Hegel. Archive work on Brecht's manuscripts and volumes of philosophical works from his own library has led to an interest in debates about authorship and authenticity and in the significance for readers of the shift from manuscript to printed book to digital text.

Melanie is currently developing new degree modules in Contemporary Fiction, African Writing and The Digital Text.
