Placement Charter

Practice Placement Charter - Health

This charter encapsulates our joint commitment to providing high quality practice placement opportunities.

For the purposes of this charter, the term 'learner' is used to include all students following professional qualificatory courses in health care or social care at University Campus Suffolk. The term 'Mentor' includes supervisors.

Learners may expect these standards from the placement areas:

  • A placement profile/induction pack will be made available prior to the commencement of the placement.
  • A pre-placement visit will be offered, on contacting the placement area.
  • To meet the assigned mentor/associate mentor within the first week (4-5 days) of practice
  • That Nursing and Midwifery mentors will have an approved teaching and assessing qualification and will be included on the live register of mentors. All Midwifery mentors, and Nursing mentors in final placements, will have been prepared as 'Sign-Off' mentors in line with NMC standards.
  • That Nursing and Midwifery mentors, co-operating with associate mentors, will normally provide first-year learners with ready support at all times and will, in line with NMC standards, aim to provide second and third year learners with a minimum of 15 hours (40%) of direct or indirect supervision per full placement week (pro rata for incomplete weeks) whilst ensuring appropriate supervision at all other times. For learners who are not under NMC regulation there are no statutory requirements of student/ mentor contact.
