Welcome to the Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Science

The Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Science was established in 2006 and became part of University Campus Suffolk on 1 August 2007.

The Faculty has expanded significantly over the last five years and reflects the current focus on professional courses for health related careers, healthy living, social work and social care, lifestyle management and health promotion alongside our science degrees.

The Faculty works closely with employers, the NHS locally and regionally, local government and other not for profit organisations, and other key stakeholders and industrial partners. It places an emphasis on the employability skills of graduating students.

The Faculty is undergoing considerable growth with significant investment in accommodation, resources and staff. The range of provision offered will expand as new areas are developed.

The Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Science is one of two Faculties at the Ipswich Campus of University Campus Suffolk. It offers teaching facilities in Ipswich and also has three out lying sites at West Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich Hospital and the Drake Centre at Great Yarmouth.

The Faculty comprises of four Schools and a centre for Enterprise:

There are a total of nearly 2,500 students and 110 staff offering wide ranging programmes, consultancy and applied research. Faculty of Health Wellbeing and Science organisational structure is available here.

The School of Allied Health Professions and Science was created to bring together Radiography, Operating Department Practice and a range of biological science courses.

The School of Pre Registration Nursing and Wellbeing offers courses for nursing students at both diploma and degree level. The school is also developing courses in the area of Wellbeing.

The School of Post Registration Studies and Social Work offers courses in Social Work and an extensive portfolio of modules and degree programmes for Continuing Professional Development activity for Allied Health Professionals, Nurses and Midwifes.

The School of Interprofessional Studies and Midwifery offers courses (including postgraduate level studies) in Clinical Practice and Leadership, and Innovation, Interprofessional Healthcare Education, Midwifery. It also offers a number of foundation degrees and is currently developing a portfolio of interprofessional activities.

The Faculty undertakes various Enterprise Initiatives which encompass all disciplines.

In undertaking its work it is the strategic intent of Health, Wellbeing and Science to:

  • be a positive and substantial influence on the health and wellbeing of the community at all levels.
  • ensure present and new course provision will be targeted to need, focusing on the employability of graduates and targeted beyond traditional boundaries.
  •  improve current and grow new relationships with actual and potential purchasers and develop new areas of scholarship and knowledge transfer through a marked increase in enterprise activity the faculty.
  • provide excellence in the provision of learning opportunities which will be seen to operate in a supportive environment.
  • support high quality learning through effective teaching, learner support and assessment practice.
  • develop the post qualification education for relevant disciplines.
  • develop the education offer in line with the expectations of the NHS review, (http://www.ournhs.nhs.uk/), that provision is clinically driven, patient centred and locally responsive (Darzi interim 2007). This to support developments in workforce planning, education and training.
  • manage the staff transition to the new physical and business environment of Health, Wellbeing and Science within University Campus Suffolk.
  • expand and deepen our national recruitment whilst contributing to the economic, social and cultural development of our region.
