Gordon Brown visited University Campus Suffolk on Thursday to launch the Real Help Now campaign, accompanied by Regional Minister Barbara Follett.
In collaboration with GO-East, University Campus Suffolk was pleased to host the event in their new Waterfront Building in Ipswich. A range of local businesses and organisations from across the East of England were invited to attend a Question and Answers session with the Prime Minister.
On arrival, the Prime Minister was greeted by Professor Bob Anderson, Pro Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of UCS, Chris Mole, Ipswich’s Labour MP, Andrea Hill, Chief Executive of Suffolk County Council, and James Hehir Chief Executive of Ipswich Borough Council.
During his visit the Prime Minister outlined current Government policies and actions with regard to the impact of the global recession on the economy, both local and national. He took a number of questions from the floor from a selection of participants who represented a range of community groups, interest groups and businesses.
Professor Bob Anderson spoke of the significance of the visit; ‘it was with great pride that University Campus Suffolk welcomed the Prime Minister to Ipswich. In the current economic crisis, it is imperative that we all work together to help the local community. The visit further demonstrates the role that University Campus Suffolk is playing in the regeneration of the town, helping to develop and maintain the economy of the region.'
The Prime Minister talked of the pride he feels for the region, the benefits that having a new University Campus will bring to the County, and assured the community that he intends to lead Britain in coming through the global economic crisis with strength and speed.
