On Thursday 18 June, over 3000 students travelled to University Campus Suffolk (UCS) for the first ever Higher Education Convention (HEC) held in the Waterfront Building. The day was especially significant for UCS as it also marked the official opening of the building by HRH The Earl of Wessex.

Year 12 students from across Suffolk were invited to come along and learn more about higher education and plan the next steps for their future careers. Over 100 university representatives and other training providers from across the country were available all day to discuss the thousands of courses and career options available to those considering higher education.

The event coincided with a visit from HRH The Earl of Wessex who was at UCS to officially open the Waterfront Building. During his visit HRH The Earl of Wessex attended the event, meeting UCS, UEA and University of Essex delegates whilst also taking time to speak to some of the current UCS students helping out on the day. Liam Stott, UCS Student Ambassador said of the occasion; ‘It really was fantastic to have met HRH The Earl of Wessex and we all felt very proud to welcome him to University Campus Suffolk. Today has been a very exciting day for all involved.’

Students from Farlingaye High School, Claydon and Thurleston High School and Sir John Leman High School were also able to speak with HRH The Earl of Wessex as he took time out to chat to them about their Duke of Edinburgh activities and achievements. His Royal Highness is actively involved in the Award programme and is a UK and International Trustee for the programme.

Before ending his visit HRH The Earl of Wessex formally opened the Waterfront Building by unveiling a commemorative stone at the front of the building in front of staff and students. Bob Anderson, Chief Executive and Pro Vice Chancellor of UCS said; ‘It is with great honour that we welcome HRH The Earl of Wessex to our Waterfront Building. Today has proved a special occasion on many levels; we are all pleased with the success of UCS' first ever Higher Education Convention, and feel grateful to HRH The Earl of Wessex to have visited us here in Suffolk to officially open our magnificent building'.
