University Campus Suffolk has today held a double celebration at a Topping Out ceremony on the Ipswich waterfront with the announcement that its landmark building has achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating. The ceremony was organised by UCS and Willmott Dixon to commemorate the waterfront building reaching its highest point and to thank the construction team for all their hard work.
The ceremony was attended by a number of representatives from key UCS stakeholders including Suffolk County Council, Suffolk New College, Ipswich Borough Council and the University of Essex. There were also a number of key individuals from the building development team representing Turner and Townsend, RMJM, Faber Maunsell and Willmott Dixon.
The ceremony was held on the first floor of the developing building, offering excellent views of the Ipswich marina and the fantastic architecture of the building itself with among other things its sloping roof. The guests at the ceremony were the first to be told the exciting news about the BREEAM rating. During the Topping Out ceremony Professor Bob Anderson, Pro-vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of UCS was presented with the framed BREEAM certificate by David Crowhurst from the BRE.
BREEAM (BRE's Environmental Assessment method) is the world's longest established and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standards for best practice in sustainable development and demonstrates a level of achievement. It has become the defacto measure of a building's environmental performance.
Bob Anderson said, "This excellent rating shows the commitment UCS has to the environment and the importance of developing a campus that is sustainable and considerate of the impact it will have on its surroundings. As an organization we are keen that our students understand the issues relevant to Sustainability as it relates to their studies, research and their wider interests."
Neil Jackson said, "This is a fantastic achievement and a target that I am very pleased we have reached. We are very grateful to Turner and Townsend, RMJM, Faber Maunsell and Willmott Dixon for their hard work and dedication towards reaching this goal. Sustainability has become increasingly important and is essential when developing a campus of this size. With all its future developments UCS will continue to put sustainability and environmental impact at the centre of its plans."
Rob Lambe, Managing Director for Willmott Dixon in the eastern Home Counties, said, "We have a long established relationship with the BRE and are delighted that David Crowhurst, who is operations director for BREEAM Schemes, will be present to hand over the certificate. We have a commitment that as many of our projects as possible attain high BREEAM ratings and working together with the BRE, we have developed a considerable in-house expertise to help this process, so today is very important to us."
