University Campus Suffolk student, Carole Field, has recently had an article accepted for publication by the British Journal of Nursing.
Carole is currently studying for the DipHE in Health Care at UCS and wrote her article as part of an assignment for the ‘Approaches to Womens Health’ module. Aptly entitled Sex and the Ciggie; the article explores whether smoking is a gender sensitive issue requiring gender specific strategies for tobacco control. An understanding of health problems associated with smoking, and the historical view of them primarily as a male concern has encouraged the examination of the factors which influence the uptake of smoking. The biggest question remains whether such factors are the same for men and for women.
No country has yet experienced the full impact of smoking on women’s health. The article considers how cigarette smoking prevalence among women in many countries, particularly developing countries, is still low compared to men. Perhaps more importantly, there is a time lag between smoking becoming a widespread habit and the emergence of tobacco related health problems. Undoubtedly, this will have a bearing on the development of national strategies for reducing smoking prevalence and, by implication, health planning in the longer term.
Carole said; "Tobacco causes generally similar health problems in women as it does in men, but there are significant gender differences that need to be considered in healthcare planning. Firm action needs to be taken now to halt and ultimately reverse this epidemic, particularly in developing countries".
Carole is currently about to start her final module of the DipHE, ‘Contemporary Health Care’, and then plans to continue studying at University Campus Suffolk at degree level.
