The January and May courses have now finished. Click here| to book a place on our new Counselling Taster Course starting this October.
The Counselling taster course is a part-time 10 week introduction to the theory and practice of counselling. It assumes no previous knowledge or experience. People who find the course helpful are those who are using or are going to use 'counselling' or 'listening skills' as part of their voluntary or work activities, as well as those wishing to know more about counselling or explore the possibility of training for a new career. Please note that course does not enable you to work or practise as a counsellor.
What is the course about?
Three strands combining theory, skills and personal development run throughout the course. Participants will be introduced to the concepts and principles associated with the person-centred model of counselling as pioneered by Carl Rogers. Counselling skills are introduced through student-centred methods of learning. Working in pairs or groups of three there will be opportunities to practice basic counselling skills. Students will experience being a counsellor, client and observer. Personal development is an important element of this course and students will be encouraged to become more self-aware and express their feelings. In this way, the course provides a useful platform for the acquisition of both personal effectiveness in using counselling skills as well as personal insight.
What are the entry requirements?
Students do not need any previous qualifications or training. However, students will need to be fairly comfortable about their ability to work with others in pairs and small groups.
