UCS is committed to inclusive learning and teaching and encourages all students who might need additional support because of disability to contact Student Support. We have a Disability Statement| which can also be sent to you on request.
We recommend that you inform UCS of any specific requirements on application, so that we can aim to put support in place, ready for the start of your course. In addition to this we also understand that personal circumstances may change during your time at UCS. If this happens you can approach Student Support to discuss how a recent diagnosis may be affecting your studies. We work with each individual to discuss, advise and identify the best support package to help people succeed in their studies.
Study Support
We can provide advice on study skills such as planning, time-keeping, completing assignments and revision. There are several ways in which one-to-one study support and tuition can help you succeed in your studies.
We can offer the following as part of the service supporting students with disabilities.
-
Strategies for getting started and ways to structure essays
-
Ongoing support for essays and assignments - reading them through to help you hear whether it sounds right and discussing alternative ways of structuring
-
Helping you to consider the academic content of essays and exploring alternative ways of phrasing ideas/concepts
-
Identifying strategies for note-taking and revision, such as, Mind Mapping or the use of Power Point for organising thinking
-
We try to identify ways of reducing the amount of reading for research purposes
-
We act as a sounding board and can help you organise your ideas
Students can visit the Student Support Office on the first floor of the Waterfront building at any time to make an appointment to see a Specific Learning Difficulties Tutor. If a tutor is free they will make time to see you straight away, otherwise an appointment will be made for the next convenient time. Appointments can also be made over the phone on 01473 338400 or by e-mail on studentsupport @ucs.ac.uk
Other Study Support
Further study support sessions, such as drop-in sessions and workshops to develop Academic Writing, Numeracy, IT and English Language are available for all students through the Learning Development Centre (located in the Library Building at UCS Ipswich).
