Practice Assessment - Midwifery 2009 Curriculum
BSc Midwifery students are assessed using the Steinaker and Bell derived taxonomy
This five point taxonomy uses
-
Exposure
-
Participation
-
Identification
-
Internalisation
-
Dissemination
to describe the students level of achievement.
Students must achieve a level of Internalisation for each skill in their PAD by the end of every year of practice.
Exposure
indicates that students have actively observed the skills of practice demonstrated by an experienced practitioner.
Participation
indicates that the student can effectively participate in care under direct supervision.
Identification
reports a clear demonstration by the student that they understand the principles underpinning practice and can apply their developing knowledge to their practice.
Internalisation
describes the level of skill evident after a student has a thorough knowledge of underlying principles and effective interventions and can practice safely and effectively under low levels of supervision and guidance. It is the level of skill required of the emergent practitioner and is the minimum standard for 'essential' skills for midwifery students at the end of each year of their course.
Dissemination
the ability to disseminate information is important to the role of the midwife working autonomously. It is an expected standard for skills relating to the transmission of information to colleagues and clients.
In Year One
The mentor will sign the students PAD to indicate the performance level achieved in that placement. By the end of year one all essential skills must have been demonstrated at the level of internalisation before the student can proceed to year two practice. Additionally, the student will produce a reflective study on 'the woman's story' which will be submitted as part of their assessed course work.
In Year Two
The mentor will sign the students PAD to indicate the performance level achieved in that placement. By the end of year two all essential skills must have been demonstrated at the level of internalisation before the student can proceed to year three practice. Additionally, the student will undertake an Objective Structured Clinical Examination which practitioners will be invited to join.
In Year Three
The mentor will sign the student s PAD to indicate the performance level achieved in that placement. By the end of year three all essential skills must have been demonstrated at the level of internalisation before the student can be considered ready to join the Professional Register. Additionally, attention should be given to the students ability to successfully disseminate information to clients and colleagues as required to support autonomous practice. Each student will, in their final placement, be subject to a tri-partite assessment to determine the grade to be awarded for overall practice. This grade will contribute to the students overall degree classification.
