Flood Tide is an organic, collaborative project between Ipswich High School for Girls, composer Dr John Eacott, UCS and Northgate High School. The partnership is inspired by John Eacottʼs composition Flood Tide – a musical sonification of the tidal flow of the River Orwell. On May 9th there is the chance to see a live performance of this work at UCS on Ipswich quay-side, as well as to hear the composer speak about this groundbreaking piece, and the innovative work it has inspired.
Over the last year, students from the partnering institutions have produced work
in response to Flood Tide and its themes, in subjects as broad as music, visual
arts, film, poetry and geographical mapping. Fine Art students from UCS will be
working on-site at Ipswich High School for Girls to make a gigantic drawing of a
Thames Barge. This idea has been developed from a trip down the River Orwell
from Ipswich to Felixstowe. 'Relics' from the making of the work will be
presented in the University's Waterfront Gallery.

Lecture and Performance
Wednesday May 9th 2012
5.00pm
A lecture by Dr. John Eacott on his tidal sonification work Flood Tide
Flood Tide is a live performance created by John Eacott in which music is generated in real time by the flow of tidal water. The work has previously been performed for the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Royal Shakespeare Company, Thames Festival and the See Further festival at London's Southbank. The work employs a sensor in the water reading minute changes to tidal flow as they occur and a computer process that converts these changes to notation that musicians read from iPads.
In this lecture John presents the ideas and technologies behind the work.
6.15pm
Flood Tide performed by students from Ipswich High School For Girls and Northgate High School Followed by the private view of the exhibition Flood Tide – Waterfront and foyer galleries, UCS.
Waterfront Building Foyer Gallery
10th May - 18th May 2012
In the foyer gallery of UCS, an extraordinary body of works by art, geography and ICT students from Ipswich High School for Girls and Northgate High School reflects the diversity of this collaboration. Works by artists Lou Rose and Emma Eagle will also be on display, offering a taster of the site-specific works they have created at Ipswich High School.
The culmination of the Flood Tide project at UCS promises to be an inspiring cross-disciplinary exploration of the river Orwell.
