National Student Survey 2011

We are delighted that 100% of History graduates from UCS Ipswich were satisfied with the quality of their course in 2011. This compares very well with the national average of 83% across all universities and courses. We are one of only nine History departments nationally to receive 100% approval from our students.
Search under 'History' and 'University Campus Suffolk' for the full results.
Here are just some of the activities we have been involved in over the past year!
Social events:
In addition to our ever-popular quiz nights, film screenings and trips, students and staff celebrated the end of term in December 2011 with a fancy-dress karaoke party. Photos of the good, the bad and the bizarre can be found on the UCS History Facebook page|.
Prizes and Awards:
The Weller Prize for the best final-year dissertation was inaugurated in 2009 in honour of Mr John Brian Weller, a supporter of and benefactor to History at UCS, who sadly passed away that year.
Now in its third year we are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2011 J.B. Weller Dissertation Prize is Janet Shipman for her imaginative and original dissertation on the introduction of sewers to Victorian Ipswich. Janet receives £100 prize money in recognition of her outstanding dissertation.
Winners of the Weller Prize since commencement:
2009: Rosemary Thorogood
2010: James Fisk
2011: Janet Shipman
This year we also introduced another discretionary award to recognise a student who has made an exceptional contribution to the History community at UCS and/or shown exemplary commitment to their studies above and beyond the expectations of both staff and other students. The first recipient of the History Award of Special Merit is Charlotte Suleyman.
Our congratulations to Janet and Charlotte and to all our other graduates of 2011.
We would also like to congratulate UCS History graduate Lindsay Hinsley who has just won a studentship to fund her PhD at Roehampton University from October 2012. Competition for such funding is fierce so it's a great credit to Lindsay and all her hard work to secure this award. Congratulations Lindsay!
Trips:
In June 2011 a group of staff and students took a battlefield tour of Ypres and the Somme to explore some of the key sites of the Western Front of the First World War. Read more about the trip and see the photos.| Details of the trip planned for 2012 can be found on facebook.
In July students and staff celebrated the end of the academic year with a scenic evening cruise down the river Orwell from the Ipswich waterfront.
Research and Publicity:
In February 2011 Dr Harrow Osborne appeared on The One Show on BBC1 talking to Giles Brandreth about recycling the old-school way - via the rag and bone men.
In April 2011 Dr Ed Packard was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 programme Word of Mouth about his research on Speakers' Corner. Dr Packard followed this up by taking a group of students to Speakers' Corner in spring 2012 and further themed events are planned - keep an eye on facebook!
