Group History Project

Second Year Module

Module Leader: Dr Harvey Osborne

Rationale and Content:

This module will involve students in a Group History Project focussed on historical subject matter. It is anticipated that project activity will focus on oral history project in 2011-12 which will involve students in interviewing members of the public for the purposes of historical reconstruction. It seeks to provide for the demonstration and further enhancement of skills and knowledge gained through earlier Year 1 modules and concurrent Year 2 modules and also for the development within a discipline-related context of a broad range of competencies associated with enterprise and employability by relating non-vocational subject matter to skills particularly valued in the world of work. The module will allow students, subject to opportunities as well as ethical and health and safety considerations, to engage in research outside UCS, drawing on the expertise and knowledge of local partners, community-based organisations, individuals and groups.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:

This module will be delivered through a combined weekly lecture and seminar plus tutorial support. Where appropriate supporting resources will also be made available online. Seminar sessions will be designed to encourage student participation and will support students in strengthening their skills of presentation, discussion, argument and debate, and in evaluating, interpreting and using secondary and primary sources.
