Arts Intervention

University Campus Suffolk (UCS) has commissioned internationally-acclaimed artists Langlands & Bell to create an exciting new work to link the northern and southern sites of the UCS Ipswich campus. The work, which will be unveiled on November 24th 2011, is intended to provide a visual, topographical and experiential connection between the two areas.

London based Langlands & Bell have been collaborating since 1978 and have exhibited internationally since the early 1980s. Nikki Bell, one half of the partnership, already has connections with Ipswich as she studied at The Ipswich School of Art and Design in the mid 1970s.

The two part artwork titled ‘Question?’ will be installed in two prominent places on the Ipswich campus. It will become a powerful statement within the landscape and will have significance for UCS, Ipswich, the region and beyond.

Langlands and Bell Question

This major partnership project is supported by UCS, the National Lottery through Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts and other partners.

Langlands & Bell have been commissioned by UCS, who have developed the project with Commissions East. Artists Langlands & Bell describe their work as exploring “the complex web of relationships linking people, architecture and the built environment. The work at UCS will contribute significantly towards reconnecting the campus and its urban realm in the minds of users.”

Chrissie Harrington. Head of School of Arts and Humanities at UCS, explains:

“The School of Arts and Humanities led this project from its conception. We are now at the most exciting time when ideas become tangible. The intention is that the artwork will create a physical and conceptual link between one place and another through its form, texture and use of both traditional and contemporary technologies. We believe that the end result will engage the expert and the curious, and will enable communities to share in and experience world-class art that inspires and provokes.”

Helen Lax, Regional Director, Arts Council England, said: “We are delighted to be contributing Grants for the Arts funding to support UCS’ commission by Langlands & Bell, who have created this fantastic piece of work linking the two campus sites. It will be a remarkable piece of art for the university community as well as other residents of Ipswich, inspiring many and helping to engage new audiences with great art.”
