Rationale
This module expands the scope of youth studies beyond the focus on discrete national geographic boundaries in order to explore the questions, debates and perspective bearing on international development discourse. This takes students closer to the field of international government or international politics. It facilitates an understanding of the international political and economic structures determining national youth policy. The module examines international approaches to tackling problems facing developing countries with specific reference to young people. In particular, it examines the nature of and techniques shaping effective policies for realizing human development across different regions of the world. Selected themes include citizenship and political participation, education and employment, human rights and security. Students will develop familiarity with the workings of a range of international agencies including the UNDP, UNESCO and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
