Rationale
This module will examine the broad sociological understanding of the ‘youth in society’ by first taking an historical perspective to the study of young people. It will allow students to explore competing constructions of youth culture drawing on research and theoretical insights into the social worlds of young people. The module will build upon key concepts such as sub-cultural theory, identity and the construction of difference in an attempt to place young people in the wider context of society. Students will be encouraged to explore the central conceptual theme of structure/agency as well as the stereotypical perceptions of this high profile group. This will include public concerns such as drug and alcohol use, sexuality, fashion and popular culture.
