Victims of Crime

Rationale

This module will expand upon previous learning relating to the social and legal construction of crime, deviance and specifically victimization. Victimology has often been referred to as a sub-discipline of criminology that has its own theoretical and conceptual strands and is increasingly recognised as an area of study in its own right. In politics, policy and practice, there is an increasing emphasis on the needs and rights of victims of crime. Recognising the extent, patterns and impacts of victimisation are fundamental to enable informed discussion regarding crime and deviance. This module seeks to broaden students’ understanding of contemporary crime and criminal justice, by exploring the concept of victimisation, the experience of crime victims and developments in response to them both within and outside the state.
