Sociology of Sport

Rationale

This module will build upon sociological knowledge and skills gained through studying previous modules at levels four and five. The sociology of Sport allows students to further develop key sociological concepts, theories and methods and demonstrate the utility in understanding sport as a societal and global institution. A wide diversity of topics is examined and evaluated drawing upon a range of theoretical and analytical approaches. To understand sport sociologically several pivotal concepts such as social organisation and participation, deviance, globalisation, ideologies, power and media as well as identity are focal points for lectures, seminars, reading and discussion.
