Rationale
This sociology module will study change and continuities in social division and inequality in Britain. Focusing predominantly on issues of class, gender and ethnicity, but also age, disability and sexuality, the module seeks to explore social scientific definitions of inequality and provide students with the means to map and measure patterns of disadvantage. Through discussions of issues such as the ‘the underclass’, gendered divisions of labour and the impact of racial discrimination on life chances, the module will also explore the factors underlying recent changes in patterns, forms and experiences of inequality. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ confidence in terms of application of theory and practical expertise in the location and use of data on inequality.
