Rationale
This module introduces the key concepts, modes of reasoning, systems and practices that make up the English legal system and aspects of criminal law. They will explore the meanings of law and concepts such as ‘right’ and ‘justice’; the key elements of common law reasoning and statutory interpretation; the main features of the English legal system with particular reference to criminal law and procedure and the impact of the Human Rights Act on criminal justice. Students will also be introduced to critical examinations of the role of law in defining crime and the key theoretical frameworks informing responses to criminal behaviour. In practical terms, students will be equipped to interpret and apply cases and statutes and appreciate academic legal discourse in relation to criminal justice. Students will be able to respond to problem questions and develop discursive essay writing skills appropriate to legal and socio-legal studies.
