This module builds upon the theoretical foundations set in level 1. Running concurrently with the level 2 practical module it is specifically designed week by week to cover topics relevant to the development of narratives in photography.

Themes in Contemporary Practice I is co-ordinated with the level 2 practical module Constructing Narratives and covers theoretical themes relevant to the practical work. The sessions will build upon topics surveyed at level 1, while introducing new debates.

Themes in Contemporary Practice II is co-ordinated with Practice in Context and covers theoretical themes relevant to the practical work. To co-ordinate with the Collaborative project within Practice in Context, there will be a focus on aspects of design theory which are not usually emphasised in photography or art visual theory, offering students an unusual opportunity to broaden their aesthetic and theoretical scope.

The module will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Students are expected to contribute through participation in discussion, debate and seminar presentation, and support their study with individual academic research and writing and photographic practice.

Students will also be expected, as part of directed learning, to take part in extra-curricular classes such as visiting lectures, exhibition visits and external talks.
