"I suppose it all began when the director of a BBC3 show, Young Hairdresser of the Year 2009, contacted Matthew Andrew, our course lecturer, asking for a student to take some photographs at the filming of the shows final.
After contacting me by email, I spoke with the director and two members of his production team to arrange when I was needed and what they required.
I arrived at the studio at 8.30am. The five young finalists had also arrived but were not being told the nature of the tasks that lay ahead. The first task was for the contestants to choose a model, and style 'big' hair suitable for the cover of a fashion magazine. In order to judge such a task, photographs of the models where required, to be placed into a magazine template and that is where I came in.
The task lasted 50 minutes; I then had about 20 minutes to set up lighting and take the shots. It was quite a surprise when I found out the whole thing was also being filmed and would feature for about 30 seconds of the show! I had no more than two minutes with each of the five models to capture the shots.
I was there for about three and a half hours and it was an opportunity that I would not have missed. I met some really nice people, and came away with firsthand experience that, had I not been a student at UCS, I would never have had."
