FdSc Mechanical Engineering

Overview

To be successful in the twenty first century, engineers need to be innovative in design, familiar with the fundamentals of microprocessor control systems, and make use of the latest materials and computer-aided engineering tools. They also need to understand about business and modern manufacturing techniques and be able to work in a team.

These degrees provide a broad common engineering experience for those who are, or seek to be employed in, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering fields at higher technician and professional or managerial levels.

Content and Modules

Core modules include:

Analogue and Digital Electronics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Electrical Principles, Instrumentation and Control, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Process Quality Assurance.

Mechanical route module options include:

2D and 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD), Applied Mechanics, Design, and From Design to Manufacture.

Further Information

Full-time students are expected to complete a period of work experience in suitable companies during the summer break at the end of the first year. Assistance will be given in securing an appropriate placement. Most part-time students are normally in appropriate employment within the engineering sector.

Assessment is through a combination of written examination, seminars, practical demonstration, individual or group presentations and assignments. To reinforce the acquisition of relevant practical skills, all modules include a significant coursework element and some are assessed entirely by coursework assignments.

These courses provide a recognised qualification for application for membership of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), or the Institute of Incorporated Engineers (IIE)

Graduates already employed in the engineering sector will gain enhanced promotion prospects and greater self-confidence. Students also have the opportunity to progress to BA (Hons) Professional Studies at UCS.
