The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a 484 bed District General Hospital located on the edge of King's Lynn and bordered by attactive countryside.
The Radiology Department is staffed by a friendly group of radiographers all committed to supporting student training, and many of who are pursuing postgraduate training themselves.
The department has one MRI scanner at present, but due to the demand and large growing population in Norfolk there are plans for a second scanner to be installed in the near future.
The department has three mobile X-ray machines that are used to image patients on the wards that are too ill to be moved.
The department currently has four general X-ray rooms that are used to image patients referred from Accident and Emergency, Out-patient clinics, wards and GPs. Many patients visit the facilities, from babies to the elderly. Images are obtained on a Computed Radiography (CR) System and are processed digitally and approved by the radiographer. The images are then sent to a PACS system where they can be viewed around the hospital on computers by specific staff members.
A specialist scanner is used in the Nuclear Medicine suite. Patients are injected with a radioactive dye and then scanned to take images of parts of the body. This scanner is operated by a small team of Radiographers that have undergone postgraduate training in this area.
The department has one Fluoroscopy Room. A wide range of examinations take place in this room, mainly to image the urinary, digestive and circulatory system.
The department has two 60-Slice CT Scanners, which are constantly busy scanning both in-patients and out-patients.
Student Radiographers will rotate throughout the department during their three year placement at the hospital. A wider experience of hospital life will also be achieved through multi-disciplinary working in other areas of the hospital. The Radiology Department has friendly staff willing to assist students' learning. The hospital only takes a small number of placement students, allowing students to receive a great deal of support and experience a wide range of learning.
Student Accommodation
Student accommodation is available on-site, close to the bus links connecting the hospital with a town a few miles away. King's Lynn has a mainline railway service to Cambridge and London, as well as Norwich and Peterborough which are a reasonable distance if travelling by car. Affordable parking is available on-site for students on a weekly basis.
King's Lynn is very close to the North Norfolk coast and Sandringham House, the royal residence. Both of these areas are very popular with tourists, as well as a range of recreational activities available locally.
