Overview

UCS offers an exciting environment in which to study, with excellent links with practice across a wide range of specialities. The support system which is in place for all students ensures that every individual gets the most out of their learning experience. The opportunities for inter-professional learning throughout the degree develop key transferable skills.

The course provides students with the development of skills, knowledge and values which all lead towards becoming a competent health administrator or medical secretary. The emphasis is on students to take responsibility for their own learning so that they also develop time management, research and initiative skills as part of their study.

Content and Modules

Learning takes place primarily in the practice setting with academic delivery in the classroom. The degree consists of core, work-based and profession specific modules.

First year modules include:

  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Communication and Teamwork
  • Health Care in Society
  • Work-based Learning
  • Information and Data Handling

Second and third year modules include:

  • Application of Research to Practice
  • Continuing Personal and Professional Development
  • Work-based Learning
  • Resource Management
  • Integrated Management Systems

Work placements are an essential part of the degree and give students the opportunity to gain valuable experience alongside their academic study. This course will be taught at one of the health and wellbeing centres based throughout the region.

Students will be assessed using a range of strategies including essays, practice portfolios and oral presentations. 

Further Information

The course provides opportunities for employment as a health administrator or medical secretary across the broad health and social care sectors. The degree also provides students with the knowledge and skills to progress to a related Honours degree in, for example, Business Management at UCS.
