Third Year Module
Module Leader: Dr Paola Trimarco
Module Contributors: guest speakers
Description
Exploring creative writing in dynamic and diverse performance settings, this module works with contemporary stage, screen and radio plays, along with animation and emerging digital formats. From this variety of genres students will discover crucial differences and similarities in performance writing. In recent years, scholarly attention has been paid to the analysis of texts written for performance versus the analysis of the performances themselves.
The module allows students to participate in such debates by critically reading theoretical works as well as reading and watching a variety of examples of dramatic texts and performances. It is recognised that a creative writing strand in an English degree is an invaluable way of seeing the process of writing from a new perspective and for the writer to become more engaged in their own learning. Reading and writing dramatic scripts will help develop critical, interpretative, and evaluative capabilities. Students will have opportunities to develop their scripts by working with actors and directors in a theatre setting, by creating their own digital animation script and/or by participating in a virtual theatre.
