Professional Writing Practice

Professional Writing Practice

Third Year Module

Module Leader: Dr Antonella Castelvedere

Module Contributors: Dr Paola Trimarco, Dr John Greenacre and guest speakers

Description

This module enables students to explore and analyse connections between their undergraduate learning experience in the English Department at UCS and the experience gained and learning undertaken in a relevant work placement in the public, private or voluntary sector. It offers students of English the opportunity to undertake student-centred learning based on a placement, which will build on their knowledge from Language Analysis and Textual Studies, along with subject specific writing and IT skills. Moreover, students will gain knowledge about theorised aspects of professional writing from the seminars offered in this module along with their own self-directed research.

Students of English arrange placements in professional writing settings, such as newspapers, advertising agencies and internet based media and publishing companies. The work placement experience allows students to observe and participate in professional writing practice, gaining an understanding of professional standards and competences. The successful linkage of theory to practice and application of skills of critical analysis and reflection to various aspects of the placement experience provide the module’s special challenge. Work on the module substantially enhances students’ employability and provides a foundation for future development, training or employment in professions such as journalism, copywriting and publishing.
