Third Year Module
Module Leader: Melanie Selfe
Description
The module engages with this contemporary and controversial area of theory, examines challenges to national conceptions of literature particularly that of ‘English’ and extends students’ knowledge of literatures in English by studying theoretical and literary texts from outside of the dominant Euro-American perspective.
The module encourages students to assess critically the debates surrounding the terms ‘anti-colonial’ and ‘post-colonial’, examines analyses of European culture as colonial discourse and studies examples of ‘post-colonial’ literature in some detail. Although the emphasis will inevitably be on writings in English, texts from the Francophone world will be studied for comparison.
