Third Year Module
Module Leader: Dr Antonella Castelvedere
Module Contributors: Dr Paola Trimarco, Dr John Greenacre and guest speakers
Description
This module enables students to explore and analyse connections between their undergraduate learning experience in the English Department at UCS and the experience gained and learning undertaken in a relevant work placement in the public, private or voluntary sector. It offers students of English the opportunity to undertake negotiated student-centred learning based on a placement, which will build on their knowledge of English language and/or literature, and gain knowledge about theorised aspects of education.
Students of English arrange placements in educational settings, such as primary, secondary and adult education, including EAL and ESOL learning. The work placement experience allows students to observe and participate in educational practice, gaining an understanding of professional competences and reflecting critically on pedagogical issues and methodologies. The acquisition of expertise in the use of new technologies in learning and teaching is an integral aspect of the module’s structure. The successful linkage of theory to practice and application of skills of critical analysis and reflection to various aspects of the placement experience provide the module’s special challenge. Work on the module substantially enhances students’ employability and provides the preparation for future development, training or employment in English education.
