Dissertation in English

Third Year Module

Module Leader: Gill Lowe

Module Contributors: Dr Antonella Castelvedere, Trevor Grimshaw, Melanie Selfe, Dr Paola Trimarco

Description

The Level 6 Dissertation in English provides an opportunity for students to explore, over a year, a chosen area of English studies. Students design and carry out an extensive or significant piece of independent research examining an area of scholarship that they wish to pursue. This might have a literary, language, or web-based focus and should in each case draw on the appropriate methodological approaches introduced earlier in the degree. The work might involve other disciplinary areas such as history, education, biography, psychology or political thought.

The study must be placed within the broader landscape of English studies. The focus of the module is individual research. Students are expected to draw on knowledge and skills gained from their degree in order to design, conduct, present and evaluate their own research. Students will work individually with specialist supervisors who will give guidance on the feasibility of the project and advise on appropriate approaches and resources.
