Seventeenth Century Poetry

Second Year Module

Module Leader: Dr Antonella Castelvedere

Description

The module introduces students to the study of seventeenth-century poetry by exploring the richness of the cultural and intellectual landscape of the period. During the seventeenth century intense religious zeal coexists with new scientific speculation and poetry presents a fascinating commentary upon this complex scenario. The module promotes an inquisitive approach to the relationship between the formal aspects of poetic writings and their social, political and religious contexts.

The examination of the work of individual poets offers the opportunity to reflect on the scope of seventeenth-century poetic forms, ranging from religious verse and love poetry to pastoral and political pieces. Students are encouraged to consider the role of audiences in poetic intentions and the significance of poetry as social art that strengthens ties of kinship, education and patronage. The critical study of themes and genres allows students to understand the role of seventeenth-century poetry in the articulation of private concerns and public debates that prefigure Romantic and modern stances.
