Second Year Module
Module Leader: Dr Paola Trimarco
Description
This mandatory core module continues the focus on textual study skills established in Language Analysis and Textual Studies in English in Level 4. It represents a more theoretical consideration of textuality but is grounded in the practice of close and critical reading and provides preparation for students’ own independent research. The module emphasises examination of texts and discourses as forms of language use. The module builds on skills acquired in the Level 4 modules, Language Analysis and Textual Studies, to examine texts and discourse in the light of current theoretical approaches.
Students consider core topics and approaches in language study such as language variation, creativity in language use, stylistics, cognitive poetics and critical discourse analysis. Students then apply analytical frameworks and critical skills drawn from various theoretical approaches in a short piece of independent research. The module develops critical skills providing the grounding for those students who wish to undertake a Level 6 language dissertation and/or the Level 6 language module, Digital Textuality.
