First Year Module
Module Leader: Trevor Grimshaw
Description
Nineteenth century fiction remains one of the most frequently read bodies of literature and occupies a central place in the literary consciousness of the English speaking world. This module will provide the opportunity to study in detail a range of nineteenth century novels, to explore the preoccupations of the writers of the period, and consider such issues as the causes and consequences of change, the construction of identity, the social position of women and the relationship of the individual to society.
Students will examine the characteristics of realist fiction and its claim to historical and artistic truth; they will also examine the contrast provided by the persistence of gothic fiction as an alternative to realism. The module provides a solid grounding in fiction and offers valuable knowledge for those wishing to progress into postgraduate teacher training.
