Language Analysis

First Year Module

Module Leader: Dr Paola Trimarco

Description

There is a need for students of English to have a sound understanding of the structures and functions of written and spoken English. This module is thus designed to equip students with the tools and terminology for analysing language and to provide practice and develop skills in language analysis that will be of use across the degree. The language analysis skills will be taught within a framework designed to provide students with knowledge of the history and development of the English language and the varieties of English used across the world.

The module will be of particular use to those wishing to progress into teacher training who will need the language skills presumed by Literacy, Language and Communication teaching in schools and Post-compulsory Education, to those wishing to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and to those planning to enter linguistic-based fields such as Speech Therapy and Forensic Linguistics.
