The Politics of Childhood

Rationale

This module examines the nature and experience of childhoods around the world at the beginning of the 21st century through in depth analyses of a range of contemporary issues relating to children. The module takes a critical stance and provides some challenging ideas on the wide-ranging developments concerning children in the fields of politics, social policy, sociology and geography that have spurred significant growth in the social study of childhood.

The module will relate a number of the issues to wider policy debates of key importance to students who need to keep up with fast-moving contemporary developments, and considers childhood from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. It is centred around exciting contemporary research and informed theoretical discussion and ranges widely, in terms of both geography and subject matter, to integrate informed discussion focusing on major themes in the everyday lives of children.
